UP – Hot Air Balloons
“This was her favorite candy bar. Because you’ve sent her away, there’s more for you.”
UP is such a darling Pixar movie. I adore Russell. How could you not?!
After a busy week I needed a break and wanted to do an easy activity with my kiddos for family movie night. I quickly ran to the store. Look what I came back with:
Balloons! Or as Goofy would say, “Baboons!”
For our activity we made hot air balloons.
UP Hot Air Balloons
- Helium-filled balloons (one per person)
- Cupcake liners (one per person)
- Hole Punch
- Clear Tape
- Crayons, markers, pencils, jewels, beads, sand, etc. (optional)
How to Make the Hot Air Balloons:
Punch 4 holes in the cupcake liner (and I’m sure you can do a better job than I did getting them evenly spaced).
Let the kids decorate the cupcake liners with stickers, markers, jewels, etc. Use whatever you have handy. My kids used stickers.
Here’s Goofy’s decorated cupcake liner. This is going to be the basket under the balloon.
Next, cut the yarn into 4 equal pieces. Tie them through the holes.
Tape the “basket” to the balloon and VOILA!
Can you tell Princess loves her hot air balloon?
She tested all sorts of different objects to see what would float and what wouldn’t.
Her butterfly clips were her favorite objects to fly in the balloon.
We sent her balloon up, up, UP to our super tall ceiling.

In honor of Russell and Kevin, we ate some chocolate.
Mmm! What a fun night!
You could also use this craft with the following movies:
- The Wizard of Oz
- The Great and Powerful Oz
- My Little Pony (Click the link for more activities)
- Strawberry Shortcake
Try a more advanced version of these hot air balloons with Mylar balloons and yogurt cups. Let me know how it works!
