The Mummy Sand Art

[After being thrown out of Imhotep’s sandstorm] I need a new job. – Beni

Ever since learning about mummies in sixth grade I have always had a slight obsession with them.  Mummies are so interesting (in a somewhat disgusting way).  Needless to say, I love The Mummy movies.  They satisfy my desire to see mummies without traveling to Egypt.

In the movie The Mummy, Imhotep uses sand to go wherever he wants to go.  I used this as my inspiration for a fun, sand art project with my girls.

 The Mummy Sand Art

Materials Needed:

  • Colored sand
  • Glue
  • A coloring page or picture of some sort

How to Play:

  • Gather up your materials.  (I would suggest doing this activity outside as it tends to get a little messy.)

  • Put glue on the area you want to cover with sand.

  • Sprinkle sand on the glue until the glue is covered.

  • Shake off the extra sand.  (I helped my girls pour the excess sand back into the bag it came from.)
  • Repeat the gluing and sanding process until your picture looks the way you want it to look.

My kids think it is a good day whenever they can do art and get dirty.  They were in heaven!

While they covered their pictures with sand they would say, “Sprinkle, sprinkle, sprinkle.”

What other projects can you do with sand?
