I asked Princess what movie she would like me to create an activity for.  She surprised me and said, “The Swan Princess.”

The Swan Princess is the first movie I can remember going to the movie theater to see.  I remember being awed by how beautiful Odette was and scared to death of the great animal.  It still makes me smile whenever I hear the song Odette and Derek sing as little kids.

Set-Up:

  • Print off the board game and cut out the characters.

  • Attach the characters to the binder clips (see above).  These are your board pieces.
  • Choose one person to be the swan, one person to be the moon, and one person to be Rothbart.  (You can have one person be both the swan and the moon.)

  • Start in the designated spots on the board.  The Odette piece doesn’t come on the board until both the moon and the swan make it to the lake.
  • Set a timer for 10 minutes.

How to Play:

  • The goal for the swan and the moon is to get to the lake.  Rothbart tries to keep them from getting to the lake before the time runs out.
  • The swan rolls the die and goes around the board the designated direction. The moon rolls next.  Rothbart rolls last.
  • If Rothbart lands on the space that the swan or the moon are on they must go back to their starting spot.

  • When either the swan or the moon land on the spot that says “roll a 1” they stay on that spot until they roll a one.  Then they can move onto the spot in the middle before reaching the lake.  If they haven’t rolled a one and Rothbart lands on that spot they must go back to their starting spots.
  • If the swan and moon go around the board and miss the “roll a 1” spot, they must go around the board again.
  • If the swan and the moon make it onto the lake before the time runs out, the swan turns into Odette and they win the game.  Rothbart wins if he keeps them out of the lake before the time runs out.  For a shorter game you can set the timer for 5 minutes.  (The game then becomes a mad dash to the lake.)

When we played this game we did not set a timer.  We simply played until Odette and the moon made it onto the lake.  Goofy had fun chasing us around the board with Rothbart.

Princess was so excited to switch the swan out for Odette.

Give the game a try and let me know what you and your kids think!

Here’s that cute song young prince Derek and princess Odette sing together.  Enjoy!
