Coraline Lacing Cards

“You’re the jerk wad that gave me the doll!” – Coraline

October is here!  Get ready for an onslaught of Halloween movie activities you can do with your family.

If you want to scare your kids out of loving their dolls, show them the movie Coraline.  The best word I can think of to describe this movie is bizarre.  Scary would follow second.  I was completely weirded out.  Perfect for Halloween.

My kids haven’t seen Coraline, but I told them we were going to make “dolls.”  They were more excited than I expected them to be to make themselves into a doll.

Coraline Lacing Cards

Materials Needed:

  • A picture of your child
  • A hole punch
  • Yarn
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Black Paper
  • A pencil
  • A cup
  • Glue

How to Play:

  • Print out your child’s picture.  Cut out their face.
  • Using your black piece of paper, trace around the bottom of a cup with a pencil two times.  (These make the button eyes.)

  • Glue your button eyes over your child’s eyes.
  • Make four button holes using a hole punch.
  • Cut out two pieces of yarn for lacing.

  • Tape off the ends with masking tape so that the yarn doesn’t fray.
  • String the yarn from the back of the “doll” to the front and tape the yarn in the back so it can’t get pulled through.
  • Give them to your kids and have fun watching them lace up their doll’s eyes.

Princess had a blast sewing the buttons on her doll.  She was a quick learner.

Goofy had a difficult time lacing her doll’s eyes correctly.  I just let her do her thing and build her hand-eye coordination.

I gave Bud a piece of yarn, just for fun.

First he showed it to me.

Then he did his favorite thing–he put it in his mouth of course.

I was surprised at how well my kids took to this activity.  Perhaps it’s because they haven’t actually seen the movie yet?  Making a doll of my own would creep me out!  I can’t wait to have some more Halloween fun.  Stay tuned.
